Serita Shone [U23] [Heptathlete] - Has high jumped 1.72m, put the shot over 12mts and has a long jump of 5.68m. Looking to score over 5000 points in a forthcoming combined events meeting.

UPDATE: Serita is competing for England in the Home Countries Combined Events Match over the weekend of September 11th and 12th in Stoke.  Will let you know how she does....

Jamie Morris [U17] Won the Welsh Schools Title at Becon with 6.44m. has a seasons pb of 6.45m.  Recently jumped in the British Schools International in Glasgow. Jamie jumped a pb of 6.61m in this Schools International albeit a slightly windy jump.

HERE ARE JUST SOME OF THE ATHLETES I HAVE COACHED PREVIOUSLY......

LONG JUMP

Gable Garenamotse [Botswana/Cardiff] 8.27m:

Gable was a student at UWIC in Cardiff and I was very fortunate to coach him for 4 years. During that period he won the UK Indoor Title with 8.01m, gained a bronze medal at the World University Championships in China and came 2nd in the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002 jumping 7.91m. He also jumped out to a massive windy 8.27m jumping as a guest in a GB International Match in Ashord. I learnt a lot about coaching jumpers at the 'sharp end'.

Kris Davies [Cardiff] 7.53m: Kris has won the Senior Welsh Title and was a consistent jumper over 7.30m.

Steven Shalders [Cardiff] 7.34m: I taught Steven at school and noticed from an early age that he had massive potential. Steven eventually went to two Commonwealth Games 2002/2006 as well as representing various Great Britain age group teams.

Andy Thomson 7.14m: Huge potential but very unlucky with injuries

Steven Partridge [Bridgend] 7.26m
Jamie Morris [Bridgemd] 6.45m
James Morris [Swansea] 6.99m
Alex Jackson [Swansea]6.99m
Adam Wrench [Torfaen]6.29m

Amy Woodman [Birchfield]5.98m: I coached Amy whilst she was a student at UWIC. She was consistently jumping in the 5.90's. On leaving College she went to the USA and began to realise her undoubted potential and started to 'pop over' 6.00mts. On returning to the UK she has established herself as one of the UK's top female long jumpers and now has a pb of 6.40m

Rebecca White [Sale] 6.32m: Rebecca competed in both LJ and TJ and represented the Senior Great Britain Team. She won a Silver Medal in the Triple Jump at the UK National Championships.

Henrietta Paxton 6.37m: Henrietta was a student at UWIC and I had the pleasure in coaching her during her stay. She won the U23 National Long Jump Title at Bedford and went on to represent Great Britain in an U23 International in Manchester.

Sally Peake [Liverpool] 5.76m -Senior Welsh Representitive
Cara Roberts [Cardiff] 5.70m - Senior Welsh Representitive

Sonia Crawley [Birchfield] 5.94m
Aimee Cutler [Cardiff] 5.84m
Sarah Lane[ Swansea] 5.70m
Anoma Sooriyaarachchi [Sri Lanka/Cardiff] 5.89m
Rebecca Williams [Newport] 5.54m

Aubrey Loy [Mount Union College, USA] 5.70m

Lucy Taylor [Bridgend] 4.93m

TRIPLE JUMP

Gareth Davies [Swansea] 14.73m
Stuart McKenzie [Swansea] 14.72m

Steven Shalders [Cardiff] 16.66m: See above. Steve went on to jump 17.00mts before he suffered a nasty injury which meant the end of what might have been a fantastic jumping career. He competed at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester 2002 and Melbourne 2006. At Manchester he placed 6th in the final.

Leighton Adams [Swansea] 14.43m
Craig Phillips [Deeside] 14.77m
Ross McKenzie [Cardiff] 13.22m

Rebecca White [Sale] 13.51m: See above - a fantastic talent blessed with blistering runway speed.

Megan Freeth [Swansea] 10.95m
Sally Peake [Liverpool] 12.28m - Former Welsh National Record Holder
Sian Jones [Swansea] 11.47m

HIGH JUMP

Valerie Adams [Swansea] 1.77m: Still in the top 10 All-Time Ranking list in Wales
Sarah Nicols [Bridgend] 1.76m: Still in the top 10 All-time ranking list in Wales

Lisa Lewis [Swansea] 1.73m

Robert James 2.00m

TESTIMONIALS

Below I've included some of the feedback and testimonials I've received since July 2006:

Recently Lynn Davies OBE/CBE and President of UK Athletics read my book and gave it the following endorsement:-

Lynne Davies  [Olympic Long Jump Champion 1964]

"I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book; it truly is a labour of love, written by someone who is totally immersed in the event and it is the culmination of many years coaching.

Coaching is both an art and a science and the successful coach is one who bases his programmes on sound principles but applies his knowledge and communicates effectively with athletes. This comes across clearly in every chapter.

The relationship and rapport is vital if the coach and athlete are to work together over a long period. It is a changing relationship and role from teacher to mentor and Nigel provides valuable insights into his experiences with various athletes.

No aspect of the event is left untouched, techniques, approach work, conditioning, planning the programme, periodisation are all covered. The difference with this book is that Nigel shares with us his tried and trusted methods and recommends but does not dictate approaches to coaches seeking guidance.

I have observed the author coaching at the Indoor Athletics Centre in UWIC, Cardiff on many occasions. He creates a motivational environment, his athletes focussed and working with a real sense of purpose and discipline. Over the years his dedication and commitment have inspired his athletes to national and international honours, the ultimate reward for any coach.

For me, the key to success is a talented, ambitious, dedicated athlete working in partnership with a knowledgeable, enthusiastic coach. The author recognised this many years ago and his success as a leading coach is testimony to his ability to create this winning combination of qualities.

I would recommend this book to all aspiring athletes and coaches who are serious about their constant quest for improvement and excellence, or as Nigel puts it—just jump further".

Hi Nigel

I see from your web site that you have a coaching newsletter available I was wondering if you could let me have a copy.

I would like to say that your cds on long jump and the triple jump drills have been a great help.

 Thanks and regards

 Gordon Fallow

Nigel,

Would you include me on the circulation of your newsletter – “Coaching the young jumper”.

By the way, I have used your book endlessly this season and will utilize it further during the winter. As a novice Jumps Coach it has really helped me out.

Best Regards

Tom Cullen

Hi Nigel

Thank you very much for the disc you sent me. I have already read most of it and I am finding it very useful and interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed both of the newsletters you have produced. I hope they can become a vehicle for coaches to exchange views and opinions and that, having seen the finished product, coaches will feel able to contribute articles of their own. I would, as I think I have said before, like to see
sample training schedules, both for individual sessions and for blocks of training, as one of the questions I'm asked frequently is along the lines of what sort of work to include, when and how much.

 Kind regards,

PS: I am pleased to see that the content is not at odds with the way I have been progressing. Regards

Nigel

Hope you are well. I have been using your Long Jump book and thing are starting to full into place, with the athletes I coach. I was wondering if you had sessions for triple jump I have a very good athlete who has jumped 11.18m this season as a first year U17 and we haven’t really done a lot of triple jump work. Just basic standing triple during the winter and some short approach work, but have been working her running as she is a good sprinter, she ran 7.86s for 60m in the winter and has run 25.40s for the 200m this season.

If you do have anything that would be great, we should be at the jumps fest in Birmingham later this month.

Thanks

 Hi Nigel

Got your CD yesterday. Just browsed through it so far. Very impressive! It's going to be a great help to me.

Many thanks.

From Lance Smith who lives in New Zealand:

DVD received safely, thank you.  Haven't read it in depth as yet but what I have read is impressive and I am sure
will be very helpful.   Last two weeks been away including the Brisbane IAAF jumps course, hence delay in sitting down and studying your material.
Don't tell the IAAF, but there's far more useful information in your jumps book than their entire acdemy elite coaches course.   Thanks again.

Received the CD on Friday. It is certainly comprehensive!

On first viewing the information looks excellent and I am really looking forward to implementing some of your ideas in to my coaching.

Thanks again.
